CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Basically, it works out like this –
Cardio = heart
Pulmonary = lungs
Resuscitate = revive
CPR literally means reviving a person’s heart and lungs. It’s your heart’s job to keep pumping oxygen-rich blood out from your lungs and into the rest of your body. It’s your lungs’ job to take in oxygen, which is used as a means to fuel the rest of your body.
Some of the things that can trip either of the organs up in their duties of moving oxygen through your body include choking, suffocation, or a heart attack. If either one stops working, you have a problem, and that’s where CPR can come in.
The goal of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is to both simulate the breathing of a person’s lungs and the pumping of their heart. It’s made up of 2 main parts: rescue breathing and chest compressions. Rescue breathing involves exhaling air from your lungs into the other person’s so their body can absorb all the oxygen. Chest compressions involve manually pressing down on the person’s chest to compress the heart and get the blood flowing again.
Columbia Safety CPR provides training courses that, upon successful completion, provide you with your American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification.
It’s easy to get certified in CPR from a certification and training program such as ours, you can either come to our training center located in Kennewick, WA, or we can come to you. We serve universities, businesses, schools, and more throughout Southeast Washington, and Northeast Oregon.
